This is a beautiful one of a kind Circuit bent Casio SK-1 keyboard bent by the pro bender James Gramling at Diabolical devices.  This is a tool for sound design and circuit bent exploration. You can play the keyboard with the onboard sounds which is nostalgic and child like in its own right but the point of this machine is exploration. It is very easy to create walls of glitch noise with it along with random oddities and artifacts. You can rarely recreate sounds easily or go back so press record and see what happens as you patch away (the patch bay is sort of unique and allows you to go back to previous bend points, more on that in the features list). Features
: Midi in
  • - you can easily send note triggers out from your DAW or sequencer
  • Audio in direct
  • - regular quarter inch jack- for sampling any incoming audio on the iconic SK-1 chip, ideal for sampling drum sounds and synth tones (keep in mind it is can only handle 1.4 seconds of sampling) Once sampled you get that real Lo-fi character with beautiful harmonics that plugins can't emulate. I highly recommend playing with the circuit bent pitching, nothing compares to the sound of circuit bent pitch from the circuits clock being slowed down and sped up. (Cool tip) You can make recorded short synth tones longer by recording high notes then stretching them with the pitch knob.
  • Built in Microphone
  • is also nice for sampling quick and dirty. The character of the microphone makes it even more lo-fi and is simply a different character than direct in.
  • Patch matrix bay
    with on and off
switches to ignite certain bend points- This is where the real sound design / performance magic can happen, and sometimes the simplest bends can be the coolest.  Patch points can be turned off and on which makes performance and exploring more fun. Volume Gate Tremolo effect
  • - This simply chops up the sound at a speed of your choosing, it's main use is when bending you could add movement if needed.  This control is more a quick fun thing for jamming rather than used for sound design, but I could easily be proven wrong I'm sure.

  • Custom finish paint job with black keys, the matte finish is superb on the keys.  There is slight signs of cosmetic age but the paint job was never meant to look perfect.
Labels being painted over is a feature, causes happy accidents, also it looks cooler which helps with creative atmosphere
  • A cool future nostalgic look, look great in the studio. It wows friends that come to my studio and definitely adds character and vibe to the atmosphere.
  • Power supply
is included. I don't want to sell it and I never thought I would but I need the money atm, selling gear is always sort of a regret especially something that literally brings you back to a child state of mind like this.
I want to stress another use of this machine that is underutilized by most SK-1 benders, partially because it requires patience. That is that this machine can add grit and character to normal sounds if you are comfortable with sampling in and out it with your DAW (or other synths or gear). You can for example send a kick or snare into the audio in and re-record that back to the DAW and add that as a layer on top of your snare. That is an example but you could do that with any sound and the character you get especially when the sample is played back really low circuit bent pitch is harmonically beautiful.  I bought this for sound design and those that are patient and want real LO-FI chip sounds that are better than any plugin, this is it. Oh yeah you can also sample a synth tone in, tune the machine using the pitch knob, and then sequence it from the DAW using the midi on the back.  You can also glitch out sampled stuff this way (best if treated subtly imo, because subtle glitching sounds cooler to me).
In the right hands, there is so much potential for creating all sorts of glitchy, nasty, circuit-bend madness. But beyond creating wild and chaotic chip driven artifacts, like I said above, even more is possible from this machine when you also use it for sound design and layering in productions.
